"Little shop of horrors" surprise
A week before we left for the California, July 17, our garden looked like this:
When we pulled into town, we had a hard time getting up the walkway, because the tomato branches had grown so much! And since our camera wasn't working, you'll just have to trust us cause we have to pictures...
Now that the camera's working, here's what our garden looks like as of yesterday:
The plants on either end of the garden are Ella and James sunflowers, which also grew like crazy while we were gone. (They did the same thing while we were in Colorado for Adam's wedding. Before we left the little Dixie cups had barely a sprout and then after 4 days of sun, but no water, they both grew about 2 inches!)
Both the kids love watering their sunflowers and read a book in the library with Daddy the other day about their sunflowers. They can't wait to have a flower on top of the tall stems.
So what can we do about our overgrown bushes? We found some netting and stakes and attempted to hold it back, but as you can see, it still bulges out pretty good!
Don't get us wrong, we love having this problem. It means we aren't total failures as gardeners...and we have been richly blessed!
Bob says the plant is planning our demise. We have a strawberry plant that we thought would take over the tomatoes, but Big Red and Early Girls had other plans. Hopefully, they stay in the garden, but they are already leaking out on both sides!
So if you are in the neighborhood and want so fresh tomatoes, come on by and we'll see what we can find! Literally, anybody want to volunteer to crawl through some vines?
